Buddha's Arhat Parents?

Postby pelletboy » Tue Jul 26, 2011 12:24 pm

Did the Buddha's parents ever attain arhatship? Did they labor for past lives in the paramis to become a Buddha's parents?

According to Wikipedia, King Suddhodana (Buddha's father) attained arahantship. Queen Maya died 7 days after the bodhisatta's birth and was reborn in Tavatimsa heaven.

Yes. Queen Maha Maya died and was reborn in Tusita heaven as a male deva. Did she/he ever attain arhatship? Didn't she labor four many aeons to be a mother of a Buddha? Did this include her attaining arhatship?

It has to be one of the highest honor to be the mother of the Buddha and so her merits must've been boundless. After she's reborn into the Tavatimsa Heaven, the Buddha visited her and taught Her the Dhamma. It's just impossible to see anyone who has such caliber, born into such favorable condition, under the instruction of such a supreme teacher, to fall back and retrogress. If she has not attained the highest fruit, there's no doubt she will. There's only 1 direction for Her now: Forward.

was reborn in the Tusita heaven as male deva after her death.

The Buddha preached the Abhidhamma to her in the Tāvatimsa heaven, where Māyādevaputta came to listen to his teaching. The DPPN doesn't mention whether Māyādevaputta attained Arahantship at that time.
