Charges against 'planking' monk
An assistant rector of Mahamakut Buddhist University filed a police complaint Wednesday at the Crime Suppression Police Bureau against a monk who was photographed "planking" while wearing a monk's saffron robe.
Bringing information and photographs to the police, Songkran Achariyasap said he had taken personal action so that other monks didn't follow this "bad example".
He said the photograph could be misunderstood by those who didn't know about "planking" that the monk could fly - which could be interpreted as showing off supernatural powers.
Songkran said the monk belonged to Wat Klang Kred in Nonthaburi but was driven out after the "planking" photograph was published on the Internet.http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2011/06 ... 58117.html
An assistant rector of Mahamakut Buddhist University yesterday personally offered a Bt5,000 cash reward for anyone who could identify the man photographed "planking" while wearing a monk's saffron robe.
"This is my personal action. I just want to help the Office of National Buddhism [ONB] nail down the person in the picture," Songkran Achariyasap said, adding that anyone with a tipoff could call him at (083) 806 5880.
ONB deputy director Amnaj Buasiri said his office was investigating where the picture was first posted on the Internet.
"If we cannot find the original source, we may later ask for help from the Information and Communications Technology Ministry," he said, adding that if the man in the photograph was really monk, a reprimand would be issued.
"Monks and novice monks should behave appropriately," Amnaj said.
Dr Sawat Anothai, who teaches at St John's University, said monks were ordained to study dharma, not to follow any fad. "In the IT age, monks can use new media for the propagation of Buddha's teachings, not to spread planking pictures," he said.

This is surely an important way to save Buddhism in Thailand!
