Brahma is Love

Postby pelletboy » Wed Jun 29, 2011 5:02 am

WHich sutta has it state that "Brahma is Love?" I read it from a book by a Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn but the sutta itself is what I'm not sure about, I think it could be Theravada? Anyone can help to inform if its Mahayana or Theravada?

Hello Pelletboy,

Metta, or lovingkindness, is one of the Brahma Viharas:

Metta and the Other Brahma Viharas

Metta is one of the Four Brahma Viharas.
Brahma in this case has been translated as divine or noble.
The word – as qualified in the path of purification – is meant in the sense of best and immaculate.
This is because being best and immaculate is the best attitude towards beings and those who practise it have immaculate minds like those of the Brahma gods.

Vihara means abiding and living.
And so those who practise these are said to be abiding or living in the divine or noble way.

Hey pellerboy

I have not run across that phrase yet in the nikayas, although I have read a majority of them. Sorry I cannot provide just what you seek.

Consider reading DN 13 where the qualities of Brahma are expounded in definte terms. Specifically it is said that he is without hate, without illwill, pure and disciplined.

Hope that helps.
