The going for refuge is the door of entrance to the teachings of the Buddha.

I respect Ajahn Sumedho's choice and it's not about proselytising, but rather about offering a meaningful alternative.

Millions of people feel alienated from the world, bitterly disappointed with public figures. A wholesome presence in public arena, just like a wholesome presence in the life of an abused child, can do wonders.

The Forest Sangha view is that people will find Dhamma when the conditions arise for that, and not until then.
The going for refuge is the door of entrance to the teachings of the Buddha.

The "conditions" are those which apply to the individual drawn to the Dhamma.
In terms of kamma and punya.

The Forest Sangha is very traditional. It does not think in terms of accessibility, or how to spread the Dhamma. Its mission is to provide a place for the Ordained Sangha to pursue their vocation.
As an act of kindness it also provides a teaching platform for committed Buddhist lay people who have Gone For Refuge.
To think of it in terms of either elitism or inclusion is to deploy concepts that do not apply.
It will always be numerically small.
The going for refuge is the door of entrance to the teachings of the Buddha.

Ajahn Sumedho certainly traveled and taught. I saw him speak not very long ago here in Melbourne. So I suppose it is about drawing a line but I don't quite see why it should necessarily be drawn at public appearances in the media.

Ask him, or rather his successors Dan. They never have had much media contact by deliberate choice, and I dont think that will change in the near future.
