I didn't believe it. As if I weren't already suspicious of my own perceptions. ;)

Change blindness is another interesting phenomenon.

Thanks Moggalana, those are great.

Some years ago I went to a seminar by Daniel Dennett, where he discussed the work he'd done on that issue. Very interesting sitting in lecture room watching those sort of images, being able to tell (hear) when people got it...

Yeah, pretty fascinating! Kevin O'Regan's theory about visual perception is also pretty interesting to say the least. I first read about it in Susan Blackmore's great book . You can read about it here: . More papers here: http://nivea.psycho.univ-paris5.fr/#Current

Just to keep on with the hi-jacking bit, I recall Prof Dennett saying that when he suggested doing research on those change-blindness pictures to one of his students (or postdocs, I don't recall exactly) the student thought it was too trivial to bother with, and was later rather sorry when it was published in some high-profile journal like Science or Nature.

The pictures in Moggalana's links were quite subtle (and I highly recommend them!) In one of the pictures Dennett showed us there was a 747 with and without engines. And it took at least 10 seconds for anyone in the room to get it...

Yes, a visting Thai Ajahn was fond of that video and used it, and other similar things, as part of his talks/exercises.

Interestingly, one of the people at the talk (who later became a monk with that teacher) saw it really easily...

Thanks guys.

No, really.
Thanks.
I now have weird multi-not-coloured not-spiral swirls in front of my eyes, everything keeps changing and i have a pounding headache from trying to 'spot the flicker-difference'...!
I need new glasses, and a dark room to lie down in, in order to come to terms with the fact that my perception is flawed and I just don't see it....

Made my day.
Excuse me while i shoot myself.....

The sailboat picture was a hard one for me. I just didn't see the difference. I showed it to my dad, who is a sailor, and he spotted it right away. He had more trouble with the desert one. What I find even more disturbing is that a couple of mudsplashes on your windshield can create the same phenomenon. Imagine someone runs across the street and you can't see him because some mud hits your windshield. Let's just hope that never happens..

Not so much a perceptual illusion but a self-control test ...
