The possibility of subforums for Rinzai and Soto Zen.

Post by Sara H »

I was playing around with the idea of possible sub-forums in the Zen forum for Rinzai and Soto.

I was thinking about this considering there is a general forum for Tibetan Buddhism, as well as sub forums for each sect.

I'm not really sure if it's needed or not, or good or not, so I thought I'd throw the idea out there and see what people thought.

Anyway what do you all think?

I'm fine with this, though we don't have many people who subscribe specifically to Soto or Rinzai.

Personally, I would like it.
I'm not much into the idea of "subscribing" to anything very much....I'm a grumpy old man....but I will admit to Rinzai Zen easier than anything else if trapped in a dark corner.

Shame on you Shakyamuni for setting the precedent of leaving home.
Did you think it was not there--
in your wife's lovely face
in your baby's laughter?
Did you think you had to go elsewhere (simply) to find it?

Tibetan Buddhism has its subforums, just as East Asian Buddhism. Based on the number of topics in the Zen subforum it does not seem necessary to further divide it. Plus, such a distinction exists only in Japanese Zen, and in the West, because of the majority Sanbo Kyodan groups, they are not really separate. Nevertheless, if you feel the need for a special section for a specific tradition for some reasons it can be arranged without problem.

Mind is unobtainable.
What is there to seek?

2 If the Buddha-Nature is seen,
there will be no seeing of a nature in any thing.

3 Neither cultivation nor seated meditation —
this is the pure Chan of Tathagata.

4 With sudden enlightenment to Tathagata Chan,
the six paramitas and myriad means
are complete within that essence.

Well this is why I put it out there.

It seems like it might be helpful.

It's quite possible the subforums would only be used slowly at first, however it seems appropreate to give each linniage their own home, as with the Tibetan sects, as there are distinctions between the traditions.

Tibetan Buddhism can sometimes look very similar to non-Tibetan practitioners, but there are distinctions and varriations in practice. In truth, I didn't actually know there were so many sub-sects of Tibetan Buddhism until joining this forum.

Such subforums for Zen would also allow people to better understand the differences and distinctions in Zen, as well as to perhaps better enable people to ask more focused questions specific to a linneage.

So it seems like they could be helpful.

How about a Rinzai, Soto, and Ch'an subforums?

It's possible they avoided it because there wasn't a sub-forum for them!

P.S. I used to practice Soto Zen (also took precepts in a Soto lineage) and am still interested in discussions about it.

Agreed this could be useful, and eventually might serve to attract more participants.

I would suggest Ch'an, Rinzai, Soto and additionally Son (Korean Zen) subforums.
