Welcome to the Dark Age.

I'll be in a cave. See you guys at one of Maitreya's public teachings.
Equanimity is the ground. Love is the moisture. Compassion is the seed. Bodhicitta is the result.

-Paraphrase of Khensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tsephel citing the Guhyasamaja Tantra

"All memories and thoughts are the union of emptiness and knowing, the Mind.
Without attachment, self-liberating, like a snake in a knot.
Through the qualities of meditating in that way,
Mental obscurations are purified and the dharmakaya is attained."

-Ra Lotsawa, All-pervading Melodious Drumbeats

Er...I'm sorry there's more...

'At that time people who practice the Dharma correctly and sincerely will be as rare as daytime stars. Devils will set up obstacles for the holy ones, so that they will not find food or clothing. They will bear a great many illnesses and afflictions, and become meek and humble. Even if there is one pure individual who can properly keep the full monastic precepts, evil forces will interfere with virtue and noble aspiration, and will overpower them. With short lives, little fortune and many conditions for disease they will become miserable and tormented.' [Machig Labdron]

'This decadent age is not a time for ordinary beings to help others externally, but rather a time for them to live in solitary places and train their own minds in the love and compassion of Bodhicitta.' [Geshe Tonpa]

Everyday problems teach us to have a realistic attitude.
They teach us that life is what life is; flawed.
Yet with tremendous potential for joy and fulfillment.
~Lama Surya Das~

If your path teaches you to act and exert yourself correctly and leads to spiritual realizations such as love, compassion and wisdom then obviously it's worthwhile.

How true my friend.
But it's not just the polar bears, there are many species in the arctic as well as every other climate that are going to be suffering or extinct if the current trend continues.
Many of these species will be gone before we ever knew they existed.

Just one point though, we may not be the total cause of this. Our weather records really only go back less than 200 years. This could be a cycle the earth goes through on a regular basis. We might have just sped it up a bit.

Here are some facts that I've collected and that seem to be relevant in this thread. I'm sure some people are already aware of a lot or all of these.

The United States uses 25% of the world's annual energy resources to support a little less that 5% of the world's population.
With more than 200 million cars and trucks.
It takes 7 gallons of oil to make one tire.
In 2004, (I think the US) generated 314 million metric tons of carbon, which is about equal to a coal train 55,000 miles long, wrapping around Earth twice.
The world consumes 80 million barrels of oil per day and it takes 4 barrels of oil to produce 1 barrel of oil.

Also, I heard that if we somehow removed all the human created carbon emissions from the atmosphere instantly, the global warming effects of that carbon would continue for a generation because there is that much momentum at this point.

Way too dependent on dinosaur juice. :(

The US spends something like $1 trillion per year on military operations, even though apparently world hunger could be taken care of for $160 billion per year. Complete insanity.

"Even if you practice only for an hour a day with faith and inspiration, good qualities will steadily increase. Regular practice makes it easy to transform your mind. From seeing only relative truth, you will eventually reach a profound certainty in the meaning of absolute truth."
Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

"Only you can make your mind beautiful."
