The question was, "Do you Buddhists believe in God?" The most reasonable interpretation of it is 'most Buddhists' and 'God as understood by most listeners, i.e. omnipotent omniscient creator'.
In Lewis Richmond's place I hope I would have said 'No', not 'Yes'. He sacrificed a lot of truth for the sake of easier understanding and acceptance, and his article comes across (to me, anyway) as self-justification after the fact. But what we say in the stressful unnatural situation of a radio or TV interview is not always what we would say in another situation.
