Thanks Tilt, that was an interesting article.

The question was, "Do you Buddhists believe in God?" The most reasonable interpretation of it is 'most Buddhists' and 'God as understood by most listeners, i.e. omnipotent omniscient creator'.
In Lewis Richmond's place I hope I would have said 'No', not 'Yes'. He sacrificed a lot of truth for the sake of easier understanding and acceptance, and his article comes across (to me, anyway) as self-justification after the fact. But what we say in the stressful unnatural situation of a radio or TV interview is not always what we would say in another situation.

I guess I would lean on the side of "No" although I do know some Christians and Jews for whom God is less of a creator-entity who metes out reward and punishment and more of a sense of presence which permeates everything and which one can tap into. If I was speaking to such an audience I would lean on the side of "Yes."

What Richmond tries to do is build bridges and I think this is what informed his reply and his article. And there is a lot of sense in building bridges especially in this day and age, I think.

Seems like rather misleading way to answer, but whether it's ok to be a little misleading for the sake of making connections I'm not sure.

He should have said 'No'. He seems more interested in appeasing his audience than speaking the truth.

HI, I think the Buddha intimated that belief in Gods-mysticism etc was not part of his dhamma, His emphasis was on practice and developing Love and compassion towards all beings . This means taking responsibility for our words and actions independantly of any God. I think he also said that if something could not be proven then it was inconsequential and again not part of His dhamma. Having said that I have no objection to anyone having such beliefs as long as they follow the teachings of their own particular prophet. If Christians follow Jesus's teachings then they will be practicing love and compassion, similarly for Muslims etc practicing the real message of their prophet. LOVE AND COMPASSION TO ALL> JONNO

of course not. God is like Santa Claus. nobody can prove his existence. if nobody can prove his existence it means he doesn't exist. so people who believe him is like children believe in Santa Claus.

I don't see how anyone can answer the question 'Do Buddhists Believe in God?' accurately when the concept of 'God' varies so much from culture to culture, and person to person. Some Buddhists believe in some interpretations of the concept of God. If God was a 'priciple' such as Truth, Wisdom, Love or perhaps Infinite Consciousness or a Ground of Being it would be much easier to say 'Yes, Buddhists believe in God.'

Also, we tend to project our western, secularized interpretation of Buddhism upon its Eastern adherents, some of which may very well see the Buddha as a type of personal God.

Hi Parasamgate,

The Buddha was actually pretty explicit about there being no creator God. See, for example, the following sutta:

Metta!
To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
