Hi Dan, you'll hear varying opinions but perhaps it's best to read widely and decide for yourself. In the meantime, some primers and sites -
Buddhism of the Heart - Jeff Wilson
The Essential Shinran - Alfred Bloom
Buddha of Infinite Light - DT Suzuki
The Buddha's Wish for the World - Monshu Koshin Ohtani
River of Fire, River of Water - Taitetsu Unno

and some personal favourites -
Great Living in the Pure Encounter Between Master and Disciple - Taira Kemmyo Sato
Living in Amida's Universal Vow - (ed.) Alfred Bloom
Monshin: Hearing/Faith - Seikan Fukuma
Naturalness - Kenryo Kanamatsu
December Fan - Manshi Kiyozawa
Happy reading

All beings since their first aspiration till the attainment of Buddhahood are sheltered under the guardianship of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who, responding to the requirements of the occasion, transform themselves and assume the actual forms of personality.
Thus for the sake of all beings Buddhas and Bodhisattvas become sometimes their parents, sometimes their wives and children, sometimes their kinsmen, sometimes their servants, sometimes their friends, sometimes their enemies, sometimes reveal themselves as devas or in some other forms.

Hi new2dharma,
If this helps at all the two books I've recently found excellent as introductions to Shin are Jeff Wilson's 'Buddhism of the Heart' and Taitetsu Unno's 'Bits of Rubble Turned into Gold'. Someone also recommended Unno's 'River of Fire, River of Water' which I'll get next payday.
They're all easy to get on Amazon UK so I'm sure that'll be the same for Amazon.com.
These links may be of interest too------------

All the best

I'm sure that everyone else enjoyed referencing their favorite writers, too.
