By understanding everything you perceive from the perspective of the view, you are freed from the constraints of philosophical beliefs.
By understanding that any and all mental activity is meditation, you are freed from arbitrary divisions between formal sessions and postmeditation activity.

"To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget." –Arundhati Roy

According to the Ask Yoda site, the answer is:
Such pointless questions you ask. Look deep within yourself. There, the answers lie.

Re: What is knowing?
Knowing in the Buddhist sense is the ability to communicate with the reality of the potential of a situation.
So for example a Zen platitude is very impressive if we are able to benefit from the wisdom, otherwise it is a wooden post slapped in the hope of releasing Buddha Nature.
For most of getting to a stage of self knowing, is our first task.
We sometimes do not even know what is worth knowing, questioning or studying.
So we take our trust or refuge in the three jewels.
As we begin to differentiate between superficial and genuine insight, we can be said to have become stream entrants.
Our knowing increases as we differentiate between arisings, or transient knowing and an experience of constancy, which is eternal knowing, what in Buddhist terms is called Buddha mind.
We may through experienced residing develop skilful means to enhance this knowing in ourselves and others.
We stop being 'smart asses', which is the condition of unknowing and become genuine gnostics or knowers.
The false in us and the world is ever prevalent but knowing that we endeavour to reinforce and expand genuine knowing.
We all know this deep down and hear it again and again.
We also know our own inclination to be wooden tops.

I don't know.
It has been the misfortune (not, as these gentlemen think it, the glory) of this age that everything is to be discussed. Edmund Burke, Reflections on the Revolution in France.

When walking, standing, sitting, lying down, speaking,
being silent, moving, being still.
At all times, in all places, without interruption - what is this?
One mind is infinite kalpas.

Re: What is knowing?
Knowing is knowing the nature of the self, which is realized to be the nature of all things. There is no object of knowing, ie. knowing "this" or "that". But it is knowing without a doubt, all illusions cleared, only clarity, emptiness, bliss. All doubts, all seeking, all questions disappear. There only the true nature of existence is left with nobody there to not know it. It knows itself.
When one is dreaming, one thinks it is real. When one awakes, one "knows" that it was just a dream. Without a doubt. When one becomes completely lucid within a dream, one knows that it is just a dream. No dream character can convince you otherwise.
Knowing as knowing that the stove is hot when you touch it.
