I'm having a new iron security fence built, and I have the opportunity to have an iron ornament fabricated and welded on to it--this is pretty common. I'm thinking a lotus motif, like a simple line drawing, might be nice. Has anyone out there done anything like that?

You could always look for an 'artist blacksmith' and work together on a design that will be possible to make and which looks good. Alternatively, give the brief to a local school as a competition and see what they can design and manufacture for you.

Robert Beer's books have loads of designs you could work from either as welded iron bar or as sheet metal shapes. As it is a security fence you could use a protective mantra or mandala, or a thigle or gakyil.

You could always commission gates or a design to be attached to the gates, which is a focal point for most people with security fences etc.

In the UK there is funding for schools to work with artists blacksmiths as art projects - maybe the US/State does something similar in funding art.

Yes, great idea may be possible to source these as a stock item from an architectural ironmonger as opposed to commissioning something.

I once commissioned a gate from our village blacksmith in Devon - it was almost ready when we moved out.............10 years later! LOL

Of course with an iron fence and vajras it could lead to building Mount Meru in the centre of the house mandala - like the guy from Close Encounters!

Deer either side of the Wheel is another idea, but I do like the vajra concept, and it is easily repeated. Could be wrought iron or sheet metal you could cut out yourself from a template. You could also have them around on the top of each vertical metal post (if that's what the vertical bars are called).

What? I was just about to say that... lol. big vajras, little vajras, all types of vajras, or just one big vajra on the gate.

Maybe both a vajra and a lotus would be good! ; )

Anyway -- My iron fence maker will make whatever I want -- and he makes a lot of designs with people. These kind of fences with electric gates cost a fortune, so he is happy to accommodate me.
