"The uprooting of identity is seen by the noble ones as pleasurable; but this contradicts what the whole world sees." (Snp 3.12)

"To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead" - Thomas Paine

I did say earlier in the thread Paul that ideally our meditation practice and Sutta study should be in tandem and inform each other. So ideally are minds are on the Suttas when our bums are not on the cushion...
I have not at any time suggested that we can bypass the Suttas...as I have also said before..Luang Por Chah had whole suttas by heart...Not just the little chanty ones.

Its irrational because you were speculating. And unless you know of people who have become stream winners without meditation...it remains speculation.
We are not the people of the Buddhas day, We do not have their punna. And we have many wonderful teachers but they are not Sammasambuddhasa.

We have translations..which are at best not the tomato, they are the soup of the soup of the tomato.

WE bring them alive...on the cush.

Er, probably leave it. It is a confusing OP. I can relate to gaining a deeper understanding through jhana - but your line about "un-aided intellect" confused me. It should not be un-aided it should have a grounding in right view/sila etc. all found in the suttas. If you are trying to understand the suttas with pure intellect without putting them into practice you might run into difficulties.

Almost certainly not Vossaga. I am probably best ignored.
:anjali:

However the points I am making on this thread as opposed to me as a person..might be worth consideration, as they are a verbatim representation of the words of a well regarded Forest Ajahn who has read my rendition of them and did not disagree with their content.
I am not actually a free lancer on this particular subject.
I would once more suggest that we agree to disagree.

I would once more suggest that we agree to disagree Vossaga. I have set out my position on the matter and you have set out yours.
I have no wish to convert you to my view. If it is unacceptable to you, or if it is unclear in its expression then please discard it.

best wishes.

P.
