Four Dharmas of Longchenpa

Postby Jikan » Tue Jul 10, 2012 1:34 pm

I tuned into a Dzogchen Community webcast around new year's 2008 on the topic of Longchenpa's Four Dharmas. I didn't take careful enough notes on how to track down the root text for this teaching. Can anyone point me toward the correct document? has it been translated into legible English?

thanks

"To know by thinking falls into the secondary. To know without thinking falls into the tertiary."
(Yangshan Huiji, X1405p58b18-19; tr. JC Cleary: A Tune Beyond the Clouds, p 43)

"While teachers of the middle way, mind only, transcendent wisdom, mantra, and other schools may have their own assertions, the fulfillment of those intentions is the same. There is not a single thing that is not contained within mind."
(Gampopa to Düsum Khyenpa, in "The First Karmapa", KTD Pub, p 254)

It's a great little book. There's an edition out there from about thirty-five years ago if you can find it, called "Four-Themed Precious Garland" that has Dudjom Rinpoche and Beru Khyentse's commentary.
(Kagyu lamrim teaching, used by Longchenpa to lay out dzogchen.)

If it's commentary on Gampopa's Four Dharmas you're looking for, but not from a Dzokchen POV, check out Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche's recent teachings at the SF Kagyu Monlam. This was the topic of his teaching sessions over the three day period, and the teachings are being posted at http://www.californiakagyumonlam.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&Itemid=72
