Living arhats in 2011?

Postby Sacha G » Thu Jan 13, 2011 12:33 pm

Hi everyone
I was wondering whether nowadays there are living arhats ?
- Are there people who claim to be arhtas? (i heard of ajahn maha buwa)
- Are people who claim to be liberated (new age gurus...) arhats?
- Are there people who don't claim anything but are arhats?
Maybe you've encountered an arhat yourself!
I'd like to read your thoughts or pieces of information about this subject!
;)

I have nothing to say except your second question.
You wondered whether new age gurus are Arahants.
And my answer is affirmative no.
They are neither Arahant nor they are on the path to the Arahantship.
Stay away from Charlatans because it's not beneficial for you.

Hello all,

How to tell if you are an arahant:

If you are an arhat you would know, if somebody is on this forum and decides to read these works to find out if he is an arhat or not. He does does not need to read, well he is not ! :-)

A bodhisattva does not become weary of evil beings nor does he commit the error of bringing forth thoughts inclined to reject them and cast them aside. Avatamsaka Sutra, ch. 25

Didn't the scriptures say that arhats will disappear after the first 1000 years of the Sasana, non-returners the after 2000, once-returners after 3000, and stream-enterers after 4000?

I dont think that's correct and dont know of any references to scriptures on that except that probably the Dhamma would last for 5000 years. Here are some other references :

1. Anagam Saya Thet Gyi (1873 -1945) - http://www.vridhamma.org/Teachers-1
2. Webu Sayadaw (17 February 1896 – 26 June 1977) - Supposed to be an Arhant
