What are some good Quotes from venerables today?

Postby Wizard in the Forest » Tue Jan 11, 2011 10:10 am

I had read many quotes from this site:

and wanted to see if anyone has found more places where good quotes can be found, and maybe make this thread a good collection of quotes by modern day teachers.

Venerables will neccessarily impart the Dhamma...the form may vary, but can the content....?

Heres one from Luang Por Sumedho " If you think of this world as a potential heaven you will be constantly disappointed. If you think of it as one of the higher hells, you will frequently be surprised how pleasant it can be ".

See my signature...
“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.
- Sutta Nipata 3.725

"Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

"I find hope in the darkest of days, and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe."

"If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them."

People don't study that which is beyond good and evil. This is what they should study.
"I'm going to be like this, I'm going to be like that," they say. But they never say,
"I'm not going to be anything because there really isn't any 'I'." This they don't study.

Similar is a well known quote when Ajahn Chah was asked about the difference between the Arahant and Bodhisattva ideals and he replied " dont be an arahant or a bodhisattva, dont be anything ".

"If you prefer suffering or if you prefer happiness, it doesn't matter, it'll just change and then go it'll go back again. Up and down, coming and going, that's pleasure and pain in life. So after the jhana, you do the second satipatthana, you investigate this vedana, seeing it as it truly is, not as you want it to be, realising it's completely out of your control no matter how wise, skilful or powerful you are. The idea of getting just pleasant vedana and avoiding the unpleasant, you see, is a complete impossibility, it goes against nature, it cannot be done. So you give up, you let go."

He turns his mind away from those phenomena, and having done so, inclines his mind to the property of deathlessness: 'This is peace, this is exquisite — the resolution of all fabrications; the relinquishment of all acquisitions; the ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.'
(Jhana Sutta - Thanissaro Bhikkhu translation)

"Knowing that the other person is angry, one who remains mindful and calm acts for his own best interest and for the other's interest, too.

He is a healer of both himself and the other person;
those who think him a fool are only those who do not understand the Dhamma."
