The Music of Samsara

Postby Individual » Tue Jan 04, 2011 6:26 pm

In my mom's car, there is a six-CD player.

I want to burn six CDs -- one CD for each realm of samsara. Each realm isn't its own genre... Hip hop could be animal realm or asura realm, for instance. Or even deva realm.

Any suggestions?

I want to play!

Classical Music, Sizhu, and Carnatic music is the Deva realm.

Humans would have Indie rock, alt rock, and Hindustani music.

Animals would be New Age music and rhythmic music.

Preta realm would be Emo Rock, Gothic Rock, and Heavy Metal

Hell would be Justin Beiber or trashy 80s music. Like the Rick roll.

A mix of Yani, Zamfir, and Kenny G can be the hell realm.

I've got the perfect suggestion for the Hell realm: "Nuits" (Nights) by Iannis Xenakis. It is written for voices a capella and describes the despair and sufferings of prisoners in concentration camps. Listen to a sample here: http://www.amazon.com/Pupils-Messiaen-C ... 293&sr=1-2

But be warned - this is really Hell!

It's less about music, and more about contemplation. If the music distracts, turn it off. I think music is a good reminder of impermanence. If we heard the same note for a long time without it ceasing and another one arising, I think it'd be a real headache.

And is the reason most people aren't dropping suggestions because the majority of them cannot listen to music (they're Bhikkhus observing Vinaya codes)?
