The Fire and Water ceremony was organized and performed by the Japanese Shinnyo-en and Her Holiness Shinso Ito. The ceremony created by Shinso Ito is based on an ancient fire ritual (Homa) performed in various forms in Hindu, Tibetan and Japanese Buddhist and Jain traditions.
The contemporary ceremony has fire as the purifying element to light the way to universal knowledge, allowing individual spirits to shine. But if misused, fire has the power to destroy. Water offers solace, heals, and represents compassion. It is thought that incessant desire and ignorance create a “thirst” that is calmed by Buddha’s compassion that is symbolically water.
