Visualizations

I know Sadhanas are different, but when visualizing the four mandalas, the protection wheels, the celestial mansion and so forth, do we visualize it around us or in front of us?
For example, is the room I'm in the mansion? Or is the mansion in the air in front of me with a little me inside?
