Can anyone tell me if you can learn Tantra without a Guru?

I am a Zen Buddhist but have recently got interested in Tantra. I am sure that I can get a partner to help but I only have books on the subject. Since I live in Alabama I am not aware of any Gurus in the area for this particular discipline. We have a Zendo here, but of course I don't want to ask my Roshi (I am sure he would find my interest undesirable) Can I do this without an instructor?
