Ma Gyu, or Mother Tantra
The Ma Gyu, or Mother Tantra, is the highest tantra in the Yungdrung Bön tradition, and shares a view very similar to that of Dzogchen. The Ma Gyu is a path of transformation through the cultivation of compassion involving prayers for all sentient beings to be released from the bondage of suffering. The heart of the practice focuses reflection upon three objects: lama, yidam and khandro. The practition...er visualizes uniting with and transforming into the Shenla Ökar, Sangchog Gyalpo, and Kyema Otso respectively. The goal of the practice is ultimately to transform ourselves so that we manifest all of the enlightened qualities symbolized by the lama, yidam, and khandro.
Ma Gyu Empowerment
We are excited to announce a wonderful teaching event. In the West, we hear and receive blessings from the Ma Gyu prayers and the recitation of mantras, but most of us do not have ways of receiving the empowerment. However, we are fortunate that Lopon Rinpoche has graciously agreed to give us the teaching and empowerment of the Ma Gyud, or Mother Tantra. This is a very essential teaching and invaluable for whoever is doing Ma Gyu practice. This is the first time that the Ma Gyu empowerment will be given in the West. As said in the Bön tantra text Sang-don Nam-Je, “A person who did not receive empowerment is like a lone feather on a windy pass, floating aimlessly in whatever direction the wind blows it.” Therefore, Geshe Chapur recommends this very important empowerment for everyone.
