His Holiness the Menri Trizin, one of the five highest lamas in Tibetan Buddhism, will speak June 4 in Pittsburgh on "awakening the heart of compassion." The Menri Trizin who, like the Dalai Lama goes by a title rather than the name he was born with, fled Tibet for India during the severe religious persecution of the cultural revolution in the 1960s. In 1967 he re-established the Menri Monastery, long the center of the Bon tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, in Dolanji, India, in 1967. His Pittsburgh visit will also include a fundraiser for the monastery and its related orphanage.
Tempa Dukte Lama, founder and director of the Olmo Ling Bon Buddhist Center in Greenfield, is a disciple of the Menri Trizin and organized his visit."It's a great honor that His Holiness will visit Pittsburgh and share with us his wisdom, his blessings and the Bon Buddhist teachings of compassion," he said. "His Holiness is viewed as a true manifestation of compassion. His presence and wisdom, along with his compassionate work and endeavors have touched people throughout his travels around the world."
He will speak June 4 from 3-5 p.m. in the Mellon Institute Auditorium, 4400 Fifth Ave., Oakland. A benefit reception and dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the India Garden, 3813 William Penn Highway, Monroeville. Tickets for the talk are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Dinner tickets cost $55 for adults, with discounts for children. Tickets for both can be purchased online or at Olmo Ling in Greenfield. Snow Lion Imports or Kohl's Indian Imports in Oakland.
