What to use to type Sanskrit diacritics

I have Word 2010. Before I had downloaded "diaunic" and used it for entering diacritics--it was very easy to use, but two computers I installed it on started to crash shortly there after, so I'm leery (probably for no reason). Do I indeed need a software add-on, and if so, what is recommended?
