Shaberon

Post by Nicholas Weeks »

Some wiser head tell me how accurate or not is the translation and definition:
Shaberon - zhabs dpad blon (shab-pe-lon) (Tibetan) [from zhabs dpad lotus feet cf Sanskrit padmapada a title of respect + blon, blon po officer, minister] Exalted officer; often the head of a Tibetan monastery.

Thanks, I read that page long ago - so would like a more definite explanation.

His puzzlement over
mysterious brotherhood, Khe-lan (or Khe-lang),
is easy. Blavatsky learned the little Tibetan she knew phonetically, so Khe-lang, is just Gelong, the sangha of bhikshus.

zhabs pad blon : ཞབས་པད་ བློན comes up in THL as government minister.

Since this is Blavatsky perhaps she meant zhabdrung, shabdrung, zhabs drung : ཞབས་དྲུང = religious head, lama holding a hereditary lineage, great lama.

Oh - and TL mentions exactly this later in the article with a much better explanation.

David Reigle seems pretty wise:

Edit: Hey, you started that thread! You don't find Reigle's explanation adequate?

I am no longer on Theosophy Nexus, so thanks - Kirtu also.
We learn that shaberon or shabron or shabrong is a phonetic spelling of the Tibetan term zhabs drung as found used in Mongolia. It is defined as "a young khubilgan or reincarnation."
Being fully ignorant, I will keep in mind Reigle's & Kirtu's explanations, unless someone else has a better one.
