rGya 'obs rinpoche (1927-2013)

rGya 'obs rinpoche, the most important Bönpo Lama of recent times, passed away on November 26. He was the main teacher of Nangzhig Gompa, the largest Bonpo monastery in the world. His knowledge was beyond compare.

No I haven't heard any story or description of signs of his death. JLA is writing a short biography of him now in English which will appear next week in the latest issue of the Bonpo Newsletter. Those interested should check his blog.

A Message from GYALSHEN INSTITUTE

His Eminence Gyawob Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche left for celestial abode at Nangzhig Monastery in Tibet on November 22, 2013, at age 86.

Because Gyawob Rinpoche was an important teacher to both Chaphur Rinpoche and Lama Yungdrung, we have a special karmic link to this noble practitioner. His exceptional kindness and profound wisdom are reflected in the very presence of our resident lamas here at Gyalshen Institute. To honor that heart connection and to offer prayers for Gyawob Rinpoche, a ceremonial event will be conducted by Gyalshen Institute on Sunday, December 15, 2013, from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM, at 1806 Bonita Road, San Pablo, CA.

Chaphur Rinpoche, Geshe Tenzin Yangton, and Lama Yungdrung will perform traditional Tibetan rituals to support Gyawob Rinpoche in his passage through the bardo. A prayer being composed now by Yongdzin Rinpoche will be chanted by everyone, as well as the Three Heart Mantras. A special, elaborate Tsok offering will be made, together with flowers and as many candles as can be safely lit. In this way, the Gyalshen sangha will join with others in Tibet, Nepal, India, and other countries contributing prayers for this revered lama.

If you can attend and wish to make a personal offering, please bring flowers and/or candles.
The lamas will provide the food for the special Tsok.

Gyawob Rinpoche was born in 1927 in Amdo Ngawa. He was recognized as the reincarnation of Khyungmong Tenpa Lodoe, who was the great master of Chinese Phowa Drongjug practice as well as the 21st reincarnation of Khyungmong Rinpoche. More biographical information can be found here. He was responsible for the education of many monks, and over the course of his long life gave many significant teachings. Gyawob Rinpoche was not ill at the time of his passing, and he remained in the five point meditation posture. There were many auspicious signs at the time, including white clouds and rainbows, and unusual beautiful yellow flowers that bloomed on two sides of Nangzhig Monastery in the middle of Tibetan winter. Many hundreds of monks have come from great distances to offer their respect.

The attached flyer contains some images of events at Nangzhig Monastery in Tibet, and an invocation composed by His Eminence Yongdzin Rinpoche
