Sanskrit Term "Sreshti"

Post by ananda »

I'm reading Dwight Goddard's "A Buddhist Bible". In the chapter titled "The Historic Buddha" there is a sentence that reads: "King Bimbisara, hearing of the arrival of the World-Honoured, went with his counsellors, generals, and myriads of Magadha Brahmans and Sreshtis to the place where the Blessed One was."

What are Sreshtis ?

"Suffer what there is to suffer, enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy as facts of life, and continue chanting Namu-myoho-renge-kyo. no matter what happens. How could this be anything other than the boundless joy of the Law? Strengthen your power of faith more than ever." - Nichiren Daishonin

Sresti means master, as in master of a guild or trade. It is also the origin for the modern hindi name Shetty (mayor). In this case it means learned ones.
