Scope of the 5 hindrances?

I've assumed that the five hindrances (pañca nīvaraṇāni) are specifically obstacles to developing samadhi, but can they be seen as obstacles to pursuing the 8-fold path generally?

But there is a lot to choose from and my guess they all are in terms of actual practice.
