How does Buddhism explain the separation of light and darkness? day and night? . . .
-Or- did the historical Buddha ever explain this to anyone in particular? . .

Well there's this bright thing in the sky you know, and like sometimes the rest of the planet sort of gets in the way of it and it gets like , dark.

The only specific examples I can think of are in Vajrayana Buddhsim, where it's sauid that some practices are better to do at night, and some during the day. Also, energetically it's supposed to be good to get up and do your practices at dawn. Also, the other random story that comes to mind is there is a tale of someone who was a butcher during the day, and did good conduct at night, and supposedly had a rebirth where he lived in hell during the day and in a god realm at night, something along those lines.
