Is this a big wave to everybody or are you looking to wave at folks who wear robes?
"All phenomena of samsara depend on the mind, so when the essence of mind is purified, samsara is purified. Since the phenomena of nirvana depend on the pristine consciousness of vidyā, because one remains in the immediacy of vidyā, buddhahood arises on its own. All critical points are summarized with those two." - Longchenpa

The rivers and bridges are metaphors.

What is Buddhist prayer like? What is he thinking to himself when reciting a sutra.

Buddhist prayer is more like aspiration. We recite prayers and sutras in order to remind ourselves of the qualities we are to develop in ourselves.

Prayers are ways of guiding our thoughts and energy in a certain direction; they are a technique in helping us transform our mind.
By repeatedly thinking of the meaning of what we are saying or reading, we train and familiarize ourselves in a way of regarding and relating to ourselves and others.
The testing ground that shows us which qualities are firm within us and which ones still need to be developed is our daily life with all its various activities.
Thus for a person dedicated to developing his or her Buddha potential, prayers and the activities of daily life complement each other.
