Retreat?

Hi everyone,

I am trying my damn hardest to get into Buddhism as I have always had a passion for it but it seems to come in phases because as soon as I pick up a book to read about it I'm instantly over whelmed by its depth. I was wondering if there was a temple or monastery I could go on a retreat to. I'm happy to pay whatever is required but would like it be for at 'least' a fortnight. I am genuinely intrigued by the whole thing and sat at home on the internet and reading books doesn't seem to be doing it any justice for me. I don't even know which type of Buddhism I want to practice so I really am in need of some advice.

Thanks.

You should try and at least find out which school of Buddhism best appeals to you. We could all name plenty of retreats you could attend, but you can help us by narrowing it down.

Have you read "Vision of Buddhism: The Space Under the Tree" by Prof. Roger Corless? It's a nice introductory book that's very readable even though it's written by an academic (sorry academics!) The book goes over Theravada, Mahayana, Vajrayana, etc. Perhaps that will assist in the direction you want to go.

I have heard this book mentioned numerous times so I think It's about time I ordered it. I am currently reading Buddhism for Dummies which is OK but this book seems to be highly recommended so I shall purchase it.

Thanks.

Where do you live? First thing I would do is start looking to see if there is a Buddhist temple or center near where you live and if there is, go there and check it out. :)
