names and titles of Buddha

Postby Aemilius » Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:03 pm

Does anyone remember or know the longer list of Buddha's names and epithets? It is other than the well known 12 epithets. There are about 30 names and titles in it, what I remember are: Caravan Leader, Friend of the World or Elder Brother of the World,...

The old Pali Dictionary Abhidhanappadipika has 31 synonyms for Buddha and 6 more for Gotama.

Thank you! I meant the 10 epithets, sorry. The list in Access to Insight is good. There are some that are missing in it, I think, and the epithets can be translated in different ways.

The Cologne Digital Sanskrit lexicon doesn't give you a clear list of synonyms for "buddha", but I found there the Friend of the World, Lokaikabandhu, or rather the Sole Friend of the World, as a name of the Buddha.

From what I understand he is known as Gautama Buddha, or Siddhartha Gautama.
