Here's a subject I think about almost everyday. The ego as the main root of all evil. I know it sounds pretty simple but this is something I see or perceive in my daily life. There's 2 questions I wanted to ask, the first is:
-What definition have you got of "the ego"? (As a concept and abstract idea of a very real thing).
And the second one is:
-Have you got to the point of non-identification with your own ego? If so, sharing the experience would be truly enriching.
I'm sorry about my english, it's a bit poor... Anyway, I hope I made myself clear.
After you've given your explanations we could discuss the meaning of the concept itself and also share the different experiences we've had (or we have) with this locataire of ours.
The ego and your own ego.
The ego and your own ego.

Re: The ego and your own ego.
It's workable. I'd substitute the term "attachment to self" for ego, but it's still workable your way.

I think I prefer "losing your egotism" instead of "losing your ego".
Egotism has a nuance of self-centeredness.

Part of the initial phase of Buddhism is the development of a healthy ego.
Rooted in the example of the three jewels.
Most people without this basis are unable to proceed.
Let us assume that non-evil ego is in place.
We can sit, practice and evaluate the self/ego.
What a monster! (speaking about myself)
Now, through recognition, through allowing the monster arising, observation and dissipation . . . .
we become a stream entrant.
We build a raft, perhaps in company.
The rest of the spiritual path is the journey to the far shore, which though present all along, still needs grounding . . .

Ego/ your own ego
Universal Ego / your own ego,
Universal ego means united ego,
Evil ego is the one which divides, destroys, destructs.
Good ego is the one which unites, builds, moves towards universal/ united ego.
Good ego builds bhoddisaatvas and Buddhas and Nirvan. They help increase scope of existence.
Bad ego results in devils. It divides and destructs every one who comes in their way, even themselves.Existence never flourishes.

Non indentification with your own ego
Ego creates bad and good karmas.
Karmas fill the physical body and their side effect is sensations.
Developing a vipassana eye thro the process of awareness observes and neutralises these sensations/karmas.
This result in Non indentification with your ego and we call this stage NO SELF also.
Re: The ego and your own ego.
That was a subtle explanation of the ego I needed to proceed, thanks a lot.PorkChop wrote:I thought this article was pertinent:

The five skhanda. Or the attachment to or identification of the five skhanda as self.Red Lotus wrote:-What definition have you got of "the ego"? (As a concept and abstract idea of a very real thing).
I thought that I had reached non-identification with my ego until I realised that "I" had reached it! But seriously. Non-identification with the ego is not so difficult, all one has to do is realise that this self is just the agglomeration of the five skhanda and lacks any real, solid, substantial core. It is that simple.-Have you got to the point of non-identification with your own ego?
