I just want to amend my post above slightly. Although most of the surgery for kidney donors is done through laparoscopy (a tube), the actual removal is done through a small incision above the pelvic bone (in the front). The penultimate moment is when the surgeon reaches a hand in through the incision and grabs it and pulls it out.
