It really varies from temple to temple. I stayed at Antaiji one summer (three months) a few years ago. Their work day schedule looks like this:
4am to 6:10am Zazen
After cleaning Help in the kitchen
7:30am to noon Samu (work)
12:00 noon Lunch
after lunch Samu (work), shower, help in the kitchen
5:20pm Dish washing
5:30pm Tea meeting
6pm to 8pm Zazen
after 8pm Free time (be quiet after 9pm)
You can see the full details of their schedules here
. Antaiji is an unorthodox Soto temple, so the schedule might be a little more work-intensive than a traditional one.
