Passing of Nishijima-Roshi

Postby Wayfarer » Tue Feb 11, 2014 5:23 am

Gudo Nishijima-roshi, Zen teacher and translator in the Soto school, died 28th January 2014 at age 94. Jundo Cohen's obituary is here, Brad Warner's here.

I never got to meet Nishijima-roshi, although when in Japan in 1992, I had set out to visit his Dojo, but through a trick of fate never got there. But I have long treasured his book To Meet the Real Dragon which I bought way back in the 1980's. At the time, well before the Internet and email, I wrote him a letter about his book, and got a very nice reply, which I still have folded into my copy.

Vale Nishijima-Roshi, you were a great and down-to-earth teacher who pointed directly to the true way.
