Don't Let Dharma Reinforce Groupthink

No holds barred discussion on the Buddhadharma. Argue about rebirth, karma, commentarial interpretations etc. Be nice to each other.

"What is the groupthink ideology?"

"Well, it depends on the group."

"So for instance two different groups with different ideologies might both express groupthink errors?"

"Yes."

"Doesn't that mean that groupthink is not an ideology but simply a phenomena of social dynamics?"

"No."

"Okay, whatever."

Right. Groupthink can be applied to advance any group's ideology, but is a separate ideology unto itself. It's the ideology of ideoligical sef-preservation.

Does that make sense? Tobes?

Groupthink does not nessisarily advance anything. And to the contrary, groupthink is problematic because the desire for harmony in a decision-making group overrides realistic evaluations. Group members try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation of alternative ideas or viewpoints. This can cause grievous errors.

And what group isn't interested in self preservation...

How's this for a completely SUPER WOW idea? Somebody define the term "groupthink", cause we have five pages of discussion about it, but nobody seems to actually know what is being discussed.

From Wikipedia:

Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within groups of people. It is the mode of thinking that happens when the desire for harmony in a decision-making group overrides a realistic appraisal of alternatives. Group members try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation of alternative ideas or viewpoints. Antecedent factors such as group cohesiveness, structural faults, and situational context play into the likelihood of whether or not groupthink will impact the decision-making process.

EDIT: Or what Shel said....I should really read things before I post them.
"Monks, a statement endowed with five factors is well-spoken, not ill-spoken. It is blameless & unfaulted by knowledgeable people. Which five?

"It is spoken at the right time. It is spoken in truth. It is spoken affectionately. It is spoken beneficially. It is spoken with a mind of good-will."

Yes, well, ten out of ten for dramatic effect, but it really doesn't say much now does it.
