if rigpa is defined in the narrow sense as one's knowledge of our condition, the the causes of rigpa are meeting a rigdzin, receiving direct introduction, and collaborating during the DI. From these causes the state of rigpa may arise. If the word rigpa is used to mean the base (as it sometimes is in Dzogchen texts) then of course it is beyond cause and effect.

Calling Rigpa the base in commentariat lit is a misnomer. The base is the base. Rigpa is knowledge of it.
