Question & Answer(13) Bondage
[Presented by Dr.Tep Sastri @ SD/JTN]

"Bound by the bond of sensual pleasure, and also by the bond of being,
Bound by the bond of opinions, and enveloped by ignorance,
Beings go to wandering-on, destined to birth and death." [AN 4.10 Yoga Sutta]
....................

The bondage (yogaa) to Samsara is cut when there is "unyoking" from sensuality (kaama), becoming (bhava, being), views (ditthi, opinions), and from ignorance (avijja). http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .than.html

Q: What is unyoking from sensuality?
A: It is the non-obsession with sensuality through discerning kaama, as it actually is, in five aspects: the origination, the passing away (subsiding), the allure ("sweetness"), the drawbacks (dangers, wretchedness), and the escape (leaving behind).

Q: How is there unyoking from becoming?
A: It is through discerning bhava, as it actually is, in five aspects: the origination, the passing away, the allure, the drawbacks, and the escape.

Q: How is there unyoking from views?
A: It is through discerning ditthi, as it actually is, in five aspects: the origination, the passing away, the allure, the drawbacks, and the escape.

Q: How is there unyoking from ignorance?
A: It is through discerning avijja, as it actually is, in five aspects: the origination, the passing away, the allure, the drawbacks, and the escape.

Question & Answer(23): Káma = Sensuality
[Presented by Dr.Tep Sastri @ SD/JTN]

Hi All,

Q: What is sensuality?
A: These five strings of sensuality. Forms cognizable via the eye --agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering desire, enticing. Sounds cognizable via the ear... Aromas cognizable via the nose... Flavors cognizable via the tongue... Tactile sensations cognizable via the body --agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering desire, enticing.

Q: What is the allure <charm, bewitch> of sensuality?
A: Whatever pleasure or joy arises in dependence on these five strands of sensuality, that is the allure of sensuality.

Q: What is the drawback of sensuality?
A: Dukkha on account of the occupation by which one makes a living --whatever the occupation may be-- he faces cold, he faces heat, being harassed by mosquitoes & flies, wind & sun & creeping things, dying from hunger & thirst.

If he gains no wealth while thus working & striving & making effort, he sorrows, grieves, & laments, beats his breast, becomes distraught: 'My work is in vain, my efforts are fruitless!'

If he gains wealth while thus working & striving & making effort, he experiences pain & distress in protecting it .

It is with sensuality for the reason and the source that people, taking weapons, charge into battle, war, and quarrel. They are wounded, incur death or deadly pain. ...

It is with sensuality for the reason and the source that people engage in bodily misconduct, verbal misconduct, mental misconduct. Having engaged in bodily, verbal, and mental misconduct, they --on the break-up of the body, after death-- are born in the plane of deprivation, the bad destination, the lower realms, in hell.

[Adapted from Maha-dukkhakkhandha Sutta, MN 13.]
