Tendai Gongyō

Some months ago there was a discussion about the differences between American Tendai and the Japanese Tendaishū concerning the daily recitations (gongyō). I have been searching online for transliterations and translations of the texts given in the official book containing the daily recitations of Japanese Tendai (called 天台宗日常勤行式). Now I want to share my work with all those who are interested in Tendai and/or want to start reciting Tendai texts. Because there are differences in the pronunciation of the Kanji between different Buddhist sects in Japan, I checked my copy of the chanting book and corrected those divergent pronunciations.

6. Endonshō - Passage on Perfect and Sudden (Enlightenment)
(Translation from Neal Arvid Donner. Verse taken from the first chapter of Chih-I’s Maka Shikan.)

The perfect and sudden calming and contemplation from the very beginning takes ultimate reality as its object. No matter what the object of contemplation might be, it is seen to be identical to the middle. There is nothing that is not true reality. When one fixes the mind on the dharmadhatu as object and unifies one’s mindfulness with the dharmadhatu as it is, then there is not a single sight nor smell that is not the middle way. The same goes for the realm of self, the realm of Buddha, and the realm of living beings. Since all aggregates and sense-accesses of body and mind are thusness, there is no suffering to be cast away. Since nescience and the afflictions are themselves identical with enlightenment, there is no origiina of suffering to be eradicated. Since the two extreme views are the middle way and false views are the right way, there is no path to be cultivated. Since samsara is identical with nirvana, there is no cessation to be achieved. Because of the intrinsic inextistence of suffering and its origin, the mundane does not exist; because of the inexistence of of the path and its cessation, the supramundane does not exist. A single, unalloyed reality is all there is – no entities whatever exists outside of it. That all entities are by nature quiescent is called “calming”; that, though quiescent, this nature is ever luminous, is called “contemplation”. Though a verbal distinction is made between earlier and later stages of practice, there is no ultimate duality, no distinction between them. This is what is called “the perfect and sudden calming and contemplation.

[Edit: I found a translation of the last passage by Jacqueline I. Stone. The last passage is a part of the Zhiguan fuxingzhuan hongjue written by the sixths patriarch Zhanran commenting on Chih-I:]

You should know that one's person and land are [both] the single thought-moment comprising three thousand realms. Therefore, when one attains the way, in accordance with this principle, one's body and mind in that moment pervade the dharma realm.


8. Hongakusan - Praise of Original Enlightenment
(Translation from Jacqueline Ilyse Stone (Original enlightenment and the transformation of medieval Japanese Buddhism, 1999, p. 27). Opening Hymn of Myōhō-renge sanmai himitsu sanmaya kyō or Renge sanmai kyō, Sutra of the Secret Samaya (symbols) of the Samadhi of the Lotus Blossom of the Wonderful Dharma, translated by Amoghavajra and introduced to Japan by Kūkai or Enchin.)

I take refuge in the Dharma-body [Buddha], the mind of original enlightened,
who ever resides on the lotus pedestal of the mind, which is the Wonderful Dharma.
Innately adorned with the virtues of the triple [Tathagata] body,
The thirty-seven honored ones dwell in the palace of the mind.
The countless universal samadhis
are naturally inherent, independent of cause and effect.
The boundless sea of virtues is originally perfect and full
Reverently i salute the Buddhas of the mind.

@ Jikan: np. :) Are there major differences compared to the "Tendai Buddhist Services for Ordained Practitioners"?
