I saw a video of the times just before the Chinese attacked Tibet. Dalai Lama greeted chairman Mao and he looked something like in this photo. The cool thing was that the Dalai Lama was smiling and extending his hand, greeting Mao in a quite bold way. It was very obvious that this is a brave man.
