Pure Land in China

Hi folks. I am relatively ignorant of the history of Pure Land and I was wondering if someone could fill me in.

Was Pure Land in China a distinct sect with its own temples and priests/monks? I know in Japan it certainly was. I get the feeling that many Chinese buddhists do not delineate between Pure Land and Zen. In fact I read somewhere that TD Suzuki privately practised Pure Land though he was mostly a Zen writer.

Yes and no and depends under whose leadership, especially looking at Ven Master Hui Yuan, the 'founding father' of Pure Land in China.
