Today, 21st Day/2nd Lunar Month, 21st March 2014, the Chinese Mahayana world commemorates Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, one of the Noble Sages of Sukhavati

Featured in the video above are places of natural scenery & monasteries on Éméi Shān / Mt Éméi / ‘Lofty Eyebrow Mountain’.

Located on the western rim of the Sìchuān Basin, south western China, it is about 3,099m / 10,167 ft.
It is also located near the county-level city of the same name Éméi Shān City, which is also part of the prefecture-level city of Lèshān (the site of another ancient & amazing sitting Maitreya stone statue, the ‘Great Buddha of Lèshān’, since 713 A.D, standing at 70m / 233ft with shoulders of 28m width, carved out of a mountain cliff and the tallest Buddha stone statue in the world).

In 1996, both sites were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Regarded as the bodhimanda of Samantabhadra, it is one of the 'Four Great Bright Mountains' and the highest peak of the pilgrimage sites of Chinese Buddhism.

“Further, when a person is on the verge of death, at the last instant of life, when all his faculties scatter and he departs from his relatives, when all power and status are lost and nothing survives, when his prime minister, great officials, his inner court and outer cities, his elephants, horses, carts, and treasuries of precious jewels can no longer accompany him, these kings of vows alone will stay with him.

At all times, they will guide him forward, and in a single instant he will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. Arriving there, he will see Amita Buddha, Manjushri Bodhisattva, Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva Who Contemplates At Ease, Maitreya Bodhisattva, and others. The appearances of these Bodhisattvas will be upright and adorned, and their merit and virtue complete. Together, they will circumambulate him.

Traditional sung chant of Samantabhadra’s Ten Great Vows by the Fo Guang Monastic Choir from the ‘Pure Land Thrice Yearning’ album.
Included also is the ‘Four Great Vows’ sung chant. It is also part of the Chinese Mahayana Morning Liturgy.

一者禮敬諸佛, 二者稱讚如來, 三者廣修供養, 四者懺悔業障, 五者隨喜功德,
六者請轉法輪, 七者請佛住世, 八者常隨佛學, 九者恆順眾生, 十者普皆迴向
yī zhě lǐ jìng zhū fó, èr zhě chèn zàn rú lái, sān zhě guǎng xiū gong yang,
sì zhě chàn huǐ yè zhàng, wǔ zhě suí xǐ gōng dé, liù zhě qǐng zhuǎn fǎ lún,
qī zhě qǐng fó zhù shì, bā zhě cháng suí fó xué, jiǔ zhě héng shun zhòng shēng,
shí zhě pǔ jiē huí xiàng
The first is to worship and respect all Buddhas;
the second is to praise the Thus Come Ones;
the third is to extensively cultivate making offerings;
the fourth is to repent of karmic obstacles and reform;
the fifth is to follow along with and rejoice in merit and virtue;
the sixth is to request the turning of the Dharma Wheel;
the seventh is to request that the Buddhas remain in the world;
the eighth is to always study with the Buddhas;
the ninth is to constantly accord with living beings;
the tenth is to universally transfer all merit and virtue.

眾生無邊誓願度, 煩惱無盡誓願斷, 法門無量誓願學,佛道無上誓願成
zhòng shēng wú biān shì yuàn dù, fán nǎo wú jìn shì yuàn duàn
fǎ mén wú liàng shì yuàn xué, fó dào wú shàng shì yuàn chéng
Sentient beings are boundless, I vow to deliver
Defilements are inexhaustible, I vow to eradicate
Dharma Doors are innumerable, I vow to cultivate
The Buddha Path is unsurpassed, I vow to accomplish

Recited in the Chinese Mahayana Evening Liturgy

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva’s Admonition on Life Gatha
普賢菩薩警世偈 / pǔ xián pú sà jǐng shì jì
是日已過, 命亦隨減, 如少水魚, 斯有何樂, 大眾(懺悔), 當勤精進, 如救頭然, 但念無常, 慎勿放逸
shì rì yǐ guò, mìng yì suí jiǎn, rú shǎo shuǐ yú, sī yǒu hé lè, dà zhòng (chàn huǐ),
dāng qín jīng jìn, rú jiù tóu rán, dàn niàn wú cháng, shèn wù fang yì
The day is over, our lives thus shortened,
Likened to fish in a shrinking pond, what joy is there?
O Great Assembly! (Repent and Regret!)
Be diligent and vigilant, akin to saving a flaming head,
Be mindful of impermanence, be wary of laxity
