Jodo Shinshu films, documentaries ... vids?

Postby steveb1 » Sat Jan 25, 2014 11:37 am

Just curious if anyone may be aware of cinematic treatments of Shin Buddhism. Currently, I am only aware of two:

the animated Shinran docudrama, which I have seen:

... and a film drama, which I have not seen:

Any other suggestions would be most welcome, including videos about Jodo Shinshu, e.g., taped lectures, dharma talks (don't seem to be very many on You Tube), and/or "travelogues" such as

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbdvsGGrigM

Among all the varieties of Buddhism, Shin seems the least represented in books and media, even though it has a such a huge following. Information about any media productions would be most refreshing :)

I think there are more out there than you may be aware of. Perhaps they are not indexed in Youtube under Shin, Shin Buddhism or Shinran. Dharma talks and teachings may be indexed under the teacher's name, for example.

They aren't indexed badly but many are in Japanese. If you search (Youtube) for Shin Buddhism many come up with Jeff Wilson, Mark Unno and Reverend Taitetsu Unno.

Thanks, kirtu, I will try using the names you provided instead of "Jodo Shinshu" as my "search term" !

Shin Buddhism being practiced by 20% of all Japanese, is actually one of the top 5 largest schools of Buddhism in the world as I surmise (look it up on WikiPedia). For some reason I have come to think that in the English speaking world there is a very good representation of Jodo Shinshu (at least better than Jodo Shu, Yuzu Nembutsu, Jishu, and Nichiren Shu). I found these 4 blogs on the "Pure Land Resources" post. Maybe one of those 3 bloggers can help.

AmidaJi Retreat Temple Romainia http://amida-ji-retreat-temple-romania.blogspot.com/ There are some videos on this site.
Blathering Nonsense http://blatheringnonsense.blogspot.com/
Echo of Dharma http://dharmaechoes.blogspot.com/

Here are some additional websites.

The Collected Works of Shinran http://www.shinranworks.com/
Shin Dharma Net http://shindharmanet.com/
Adelaide Buddhist Dojo http://www.adelaideshinbuddhistdojo.com.au/index.htm

Also, Rory and Pork Chop on this forum are very knowledgeable of Japanese Pure Land groups.

ylee, thank you for these sources - I'll poke around in them and maybe ask some of the bloggers re: Shin media as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

Me? I'm not knowledgeable, I just like giving rory a hard time  (sorry, i kid).
Seriously though, I have a LOT to learn about Japanese Buddhism. I got interested in the topic because I was practicing at a Vietnamese temple and wanted something that was culturally a little "closer to home" (went to high school in Japan, wife's Japanese).

Not sure if this is the type of treatment you're looking for in regards to movies about Jodo Shinshu:

The BCA bookstore has a ton of Shin resources.

For podcasts, I've found the following rather enjoyable:

Some of my favorite Shin youtube channels (some are in Japanese, sorry):

(This is a fraction of what's out there)

EDIT: if you want Shin blogs, it might be easier to take this offline, as there are a LOT.
