The Twin Practice of Pure Land & Ch'an

The Twin Practice of Pure Land & Ch'an

"Pure Land Buddhism advocates reciting the Buddha's name or mindfulness of the Buddha, based on the teaching that the mind itself is buddha.
Ch'an Buddhism teaches that as the mind is purified, so is the land purified.
Reciting Buddha's name and the approach of Ch'an Buddhism are essentially identical.
Nonetheless, Ch'an practice methods are the foundation for a stabilized mind and can better ensure one's possibility of birth in the Western Pure Land.

禪淨雙修 chan jing xuan shiou - "double practice of Chan and Pure" - is a common topic in Chinese Buddhism. There are numerous texts written by Chinese Buddhists about it. A very common method is to nienfo while contemplating the question 念佛是誰?, literally "Who is nienfo'ing?"

I too hope that one day my practice in nienfo can take me into Chan.
