Chongqing (pronounced CHONG-cheeng) is at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jia Ling rivers, located in Southwest China. It has a rich and unique culture and serves as the economic center of the upstream Yangtze River area. The population is exploding, with nearly 1,300 people moving to the city each day. The city’s skyline, dominated by skyscrapers, resembles New York City, but Chongqing is also surrounded by mountains, which gives the city a unique appearance. Although China is officially atheist, many Chongqing people retain their Buddhist, Taoist and superstitious beliefs. Less than 1 percent of the Chongqing municipality’s 28 million-plus people are Christians, and many of those have never heard the name of Jesus.
