I was curious if anyone could identify which dharani this is? There is sanskrit and chinese, but a search for the Sanskrit did not bring any results besides more Chinese pages.

Thanks! The Casket Seal Dharani, like so many others, doesn't seem well known outside of the Sinosphere. I have actually been meaning to read up on Casket Seal Dharani more lately, so this is a pleasant surprize. Thanks for the quick response! Amituofo!

This version of the dharani is the one that I have chosen to chant.

Coming from a Chinese background, I often have no idea that certain popular practices in Chinese Buddhism are nowhere as widely practised in English-speaking communities.

I personally find the Casket Seal Dharani to be so good that I have made a vow to uphold it and to one day become one with it. I believe it adds to my nienfo practice, as using this dharani one is also contemplating ALL Buddha, including Amitabha. In the sutra it is specifically said that this dharani can grant rebirth to any Buddha's pure land - how great is that?

And the Casket Seal Dharani method can be so easy. If you don't want to chant the dharani or the sutra, no problem - build a Casket Seal Dharani Stupa, walk around it or make offerings to it in a proper way and you already reap incredible benefits. They include worldly benefits - health, wealth, career, a good husband/wife, children... just to name a few. And what's more - "all wishes will be fulfilled"!

It sounds a bit too-good-to-be-true, right? Yeah, I thought so too, but it's spoken by the Buddha and written in the sutra. Its too-good-to-be-true'ness is, I think, on the same level as Amitabha's vows. If you believe in Western Pure Land practice why can't you believe in the Casket Seal Dharani Sutra?

Anyway, glad to meet a fellow Buddhist who likes this dharani.

May I ask, are there instructions for making a stupa either in Chinese or English? Thanks!

I know of two types of Casket Seal stupa - the five-element style and the Ashoka style. The below linked materials are all in Chinese. If anyone who cannot read Chinese would like a summarised translation for any text, let me know and I'll try my best to help.

From what I see, all we need to do is make any style of stupa, and then just put the mantra inside? No need to invite a Dharma Master to preside over the building? Is it really that simple? (I fear my understanding is not enough...)

This is how I see it. If you could take the stupa to a Dharma Master at a temple for a blessing/empowerment, great. You may also want to ask him/her to bless/empower the written/printed sutra or mantra before you place it in the stupa.

An alternative is to ask for some Great Compassion Dharani water and at your own home cleanse the stupa before you place the sutra/mantra inside.

Failing that, I see no problem with trying to cleanse/bless/empower the stupa yourself by e.g. reciting the mantra itself, and/or some other mantra if you want, like the Great Compassion Dharani or even Om Mani Padme Huum.

Sometimes, with all of the attention to proper ritual procedures, ceremonies, chants, etc that some schools practice, I think to myself: "If it's simple and if it's done by me, it probably won't work; even with the proper intention, if this-and-this material is not selected on such-and-such a day, then the Dharma words will have no power."

So yeah, off-topic, but upon reading the sutra, it IS that simple!

Thanks for the info.

From what I understand, the more accomplished someone is in the Threefold Training, the more powerful are his/her rituals, chanting, mantra, etc. If you have access to one such person, great, request the service from him/her. If you don't, you'd just have to make do yourself. I understand the key is your sincerity and compassion.

If you refer to the Great Compassion Dharani Sutra, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva taught us the ten hearts of the dharani:
"It is the great merciful and compassionate heart, the impartial heart, the motionless heart, the unpolluted and unattached heart, the emptiness-observing heart, the respectful heart, the humble heart, the uncluttered heart, the non-view and non-grasping heart, and the uppermost Bodhi-Heart. You should know that such hearts are the feature and characteristics of this Dharani, you should practice according to them."

I think this not only applies to one's chanting of the Great Compassion Dharani, but in all dharani/mantra practice. Perhaps you could give this a try when you use your Casket Seal Dharani and stupa.

Do you mean the link isn't working for you?

Here is an extract of the text that might be relevant to your interest (sorry to those who cannot read Chinese):

如果家中设有佛堂,应将宝塔安置在佛堂中央,其他佛像、菩萨法像以及其他天神围绕在此塔周围;
