Protector practices are not really a pick and choose situation. For beginners, teachings, transmissions and empowerments

I asked H. H. Penor Rinpoche this and other questions in person,
face to face. He invited people to give him a photo for inclusion
in the mandala when he was giving certain empowerments. We
also asked him if a dharma friend or vajra-sibling can visualize
the friend who is unable to be present-- can that person then receive
the empowerment? He said it was "possible." Same for internet or
other kind of broadcast-- possible. He thought certain other criteria
might need to be present.
The picture method looks to me something like Naydren for the deceased.
Give empowerment to the photo-- the person represented doesn't especially
know when. But maybe they do. Hard to say.

To do this as a personal practice requires empowerment. Generally those with Yamantaka empowerment can engage in the torma offering and praise contained within the Long Yamantaka sadhana.
More elaborate practices require initiation into Kalarupa. However there are some lamas who are more flexible about this. Lama Zopa Rinpoche says for the 64 Offerings to Kalarupa practice a Yamantaka empowerment is sufficient.
It is also worth noting that Kalarupa has different manifestations: outer and inner for example
The inner forms tend to be kept more hidden, though Tsongkhapa's praise to inner Kalarupa is quite commonly recited.
