Khenpo Appey Yönten Zangpo (1927-2010), one of the foremost masters of the Sakya school in recent times, was a student of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö and the tutor of Sogyal Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.

At the age of nine he became a monk at Serjong Monastery, where a year later he received his first teachings from Gapa Khenpo Jamgyal, also known as Khenpo Jamyang Gyaltsen.

For nine years, from the age of 14 to 23, at Serjong Shedra, Khenpo Appey studied ‘the thirteen classical texts’ based on Khenpo Shenga’s famous annotation commentaries. During his last two years at the shedra he studied with Khenpo Dragyab Lodrö who later became the fifth khenpo at Dzongsar Shedra and wrote a commentary on the ninth chapter of the Bodhicharyavatara. After his nine years of intensive study at Serjong Shedra, Khenpo Appey went to the shedra at Dzongsar Monastery, where he was able to continue his studies under Khenpo Dragyab Lodrö for another year. He also studied with Dezhung Ajam Rinpoche.

He went to see Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö in Sikkim in 1957. He then returned to Tibet and spent time at Ngor Monastery, but left in 1959 when Tibet was lost. He went to see Jamyang Khyentse who was ill in Sikkim. After Jamyang Khyentse passed away, in accordance with his final wishes, he began to teach Sogyal Rinpoche, giving him instruction on the Bodhicharyavatara in the Palace Monastery in the presence of Jamyang Khyentse's kudung.

Later, while Sogyal Rinpoche was attending school in Kalimpong, Khenpo Appey spent one or two years in retreat in a small village in Sikkim. He was later requested to tutor Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche. For this purpose, he founded the Sakya College in Barlow Ganj, Mussoorie, on 19th December 1972, the anniversary of Sakya Pandita. In the first year, there were only seven students. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche studied there for five years. From 1972 to 1985, Khenpo Appey worked full time to look after the college and was responsible for teachings the classes, supervising the administration and raising funds.

In 2001 he established the International Buddhist Academy in Boudhanath, Nepal. He passed away in Nepal on Tuesday 28th December, 2010.

From: International Buddhist Academy
Subject: An Announcement From IBA

Received: Sunday, 2 January, 2011, 9:06 AM

We are very sorry to have to bear the sad news to you of the passing of our greatly beloved Guru, the founder of IBA, the Most Venerable Khenchen Appey Rinpoche, on the 28th of December, 2010, at 9:30 am, Nepali standard time. Rinpoche breathed his last breath peacefully, amid auspicious signs.

At Rinpoche's specific request, to insure that his passing would take place calmly and quietly, news of his transition was carefully delayed until two days ago. Pujas for the duration of the 49 days are ongoing now, and preparations for the cremation are being made.

We will not be able to reply to e-mails which are not of an urgent nature, for the next few weeks, so we are requesting that you wait until we have the opportunity to send more information to you directly, before contacting us. Thank you.

Due to recent events in Nepal, His Eminence Ratna Vajra Rinpoche will not be able to come to Tsechen Kunchab Ling on Sunday, January 9 as originally planned.

Although Rinpoche's presence will be sorely missed, members and friends of Tsechen Kunchab Ling will come together on that day to celebrate the new year, join in prayer and meditation, and partake of festive food and tea. All are welcome to join in this auspicious start to the new year. As a special blessing, we will watch a video of New Year's advice and encouragement that His Eminence recorded just for this occasion. This is also an excellent opportunity to see all the recent progress made in the construction of the new temple, including the main Buddha statue now residing in the shrine hall.

From Tsechen Kunchab Ling:

Sunday, January 9 at 10:30 AM at Tsechen Kunchab Ling

With sadness, we have learned of the recent passing of the greatly respected Khenchen Appey Rinpoche, senior abbot of International Buddhist Academy in Kathmandu, and founder of Sakya College in India.

For this reason, His Eminence Ratna Vajra Rinpoche has suddenly left for Nepal. However, His Eminence advised us that it is very important to come together at this time to accumulate merit, and also to pray, meditate, and offer as many candles as possible. He has recorded a special video message for the friends of Tsechen Kunchab Ling, which will be played on this occasion.

I sincerely hope that you can join us this Sunday for prayers, beginning at 10:30 am. Please stay for lunch and remain as long as your schedule allows.
