H. H. Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche was asked:

"What is the difference between a Tibetan Lama and a Western Lama?"

His oft quoted response was

"Of course, everybody knows...
a Tibetan Lama has a moon-like face
and a Western Lama has a face like the Rocky Mountains!"

There was much laughter, and I cannot remember for certain,
but it seems that he stated further that in terms of inner qualities
there was no difference at all.
Ah - HH Thinley Norbu was the source of that quote. :namaste:

I had heard that many years before I became a TB student.

Well they could have been following Guru Rinpoche
Guru Rinpoche! He gave teachings and at the end could add words like these: "...but you who makes elaborate plans for what is not necessary, cannot practice with diligence",
or "you with your desires and craving like raging dual winds are thinking not at Dharma but on yourself..."
And so on...

But then he said: apply you to practice.

Stereotypes....

If own minds' projections are seen, (cloths, whatever...), no fabricated or modified stories about what seems to appear should form "stereotypes".

In America money grows everywhere and in the Himalayas are only saints hopping around.....so great all this!

Learn something new every day. Like, I had no idea that the principal occupation of a Himalayan saint was hopping around. :rolling:

I really don't believe that TNR loved the West any less than the East. I have found his teachings to be Upadesha on just about every page. He did not compromise in any respect to Vajrayana. Even this article has Upadesha in it, imo.

There are bad teachers and there are good teachers, whether Western or Eastern. I have followed some bad ones straight to hell and am back. With TNR's and Lama Dawa's assistance, I am no longer bitter and follow the sublime teachings as best as I can.

Best,

Tenzin Dorje

Sarwa Mangalam! I rejoice you were able to purify your negative karma with bad teachers in this life so that your powerful positive merit could lead you to two teachers of incomparable wisdom and skill. If you've been under the wing of these two there is no doubt you will fly far.
