Lucille Cedercrans Schaible

Post by dzogchungpa »

I stumbled on this, from http://www.tersar.org/dharma-centers/ye ... po-denver/:
Yeshe Nyingpo Denver originally incorporated in 1978 as Udiyan Maitreya Kosha, the name having been received from His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche. Lucille Cedercrans Schaible was the group’s teacher until her death in 1984. In addition the center students received teachings from His Holiness Shenphen Dawa Rinpoche who currently continues as the spiritual director, Khenchen Palden Sherab, Khen Tsewang Dongyal, Ven Gyatrul Rinpoche, Ven Chagdud Rinpoche and others. His Holiness Shenphen Dawa Rinpoche spent four months in 1995 giving intensive teachings and empowerments to students in Denver and then lived at our center with his family for two years.

The initial teacher of the group, Lucille Cedercrans Schaible, developed a meditation curriculum in the l950’s, The Nature of Soul, as a bridge for western Christians to concepts of Buddhism and other Asian religions. During the 50s and early 60s she trained many students in these materials and others she developed.

Taking a break from full time meditation teaching, she became a research associate at the University of Michigan. In the early 1970’s she returned to meditation teaching and attended the first Human Development Seminar with Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche in the summer of 1973. He asked her to switch from her previous meditation form to teaching Buddhism with her earlier students and new students. In 1976, she met His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche who then became her teacher and authorized her to teach at the Denver center. Further information about her unique spiritual journey can be found at http://www.dakini-wisdom.com.
You can read a little more about her at the dakini wisdom site mentioned above, and you can download 2 of her books here:

She sounds like a very interesting person. Does anyone know anything about her?

I hear that there were unusual signs accompanying her death.

From http://www.bridgetomaitreya.org/lucille.html:
Lucille transitioned from this life on June 21, 1984 in Denver, Colorado, surrounded by her students. The day was clear and sunny, but at the moment of her death there was a clap of thunder which continued to echo throughout the region. According to Tibetan tradition, this was a sign that a Great One has passed. Commenting on Lucille's passing, Khenpo Tsewang praised Lucille as a lama, a saint and a yogi.
Is that what you heard about?
