where in america are nyingma retreat centers?

Post by jay88 »

Im looking to buy some land back home in the States to build a home and practice . I would like to buy land near a Nyingma retreat center or temple preferably but the main thing ish to be able to stay in close contact with a Sangha and teachers. I want my family to be able to practice and be raised in an area influenced by the Dharma. So if any one can recommend a few temples or retreat centers or communities in the states it would help me out a lot. Anywhere in the states is fine . Thank you all :namaste:

Colorado, California, Oregon, Upstate New York., these are the main places where you find such temples and centers.

Here are 3 I know about:

Kinda funny, I'm into checking out Kagyu places for the same reason. Good luck with your search.

Way to count.

In Northern California there are also:

Pema Osel Ling

Orgyen Dorje Den

A relatively new place that looks promising, fairly close to Chagdud Gonpa/Rigdzin Ling:
http://www.ewamkusumling.com/

Dechen Rang

Anam Thubten's place

A new place that is small, but looks quite promising:
Longsal Ling

For Nyingma in the US it's hard to beat Northern California.

ODD is a Dharma Center in town. I think he was looking for a country center.

NB: Be careful using the word "retreat" at these places. They will think you're looking for a hermitage of some sort. If you're looking for a monastery or residential Dharma place in the country that's different.

Well, he did say he was interested in "temples or retreat centers or communities", and ODD certainly fits the bill.

While I'm at it, I forgot to mention another NorCal Nyingma place:
Gomde Usa

I guess it's my assumption that buying property and building a home in Alameda would be out to reach for people posting here.

This place in Washington could be good:

I haven't been there, but I did attend a program with Kilung Rinpoche and I can highly recommend him.

Not that my opinion counts for much.

I highly recommend Orgyen Chö Dzong - http://www.tersar.org/dharma-centers/orgyen-cho-dzong/

His Holiness Dungse Shenphen Dawa Norbu Rinpoche, son of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, is active both here and in the center in NYC and makes himself very available to his students. Due to health reasons, Rinpoche does not travel out of the immediate area anymore, which is very unfortunate for his international sangha, but of course of tremendous benefit for local practitioners who have the privilege of making a continuous connection with an incomparable lama. If you are interested in the Dudjom Tersar, this would be one of the best places to consider in the states. It seems to me that not many people seem to know that this area in general (including NYC) is a huge place of activity for the Tersar.

Also of benefit, if you're interested in other Nyingma lineages, there is Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche's center (Padmasambhava Buddhist Center) which is only 2 hours away from Orgyen Cho Dzong. There are also a few other Nyingma teachers in the area, and there are a host of lesser-known Nyingma teachers living in NYC if you are interested in making the journey occasionally.

I'm a little late to chime in, but I'd also like to mention the Palyul Nyingma retreat center in upstate NY. They hold a one-month retreat there each summer, but unfortunately there's not much else going on there the rest of the year (although they are meaning to change that).

Also, if you're looking to buy land and price is a concern, upstate NY may be your cheapest option. The trade-offs you'd have to be OK with are snowy winters, shabby economic outlook, and a dearth of cultural activities.

oops. The third was supposed to be:

https://katogcholing.com/retreat-center

It is in a NW Arkansas. I just talked to a guy that has bought land and built a house close to this place. He says it was cheap.

They do 3 year retreats there. Must be fairly serious.
